Does Costa Rica Still Discriminate Against Gays?
#gaycostarica #gaypride #relocation Still Discrimination of Gay in Costa Rica? When we arrived in Costa Rica 19 years ago, gay was discriminated against. I know, it happened to us many times. Police warning me PDA was frowned upon, kicked out of bars, slurs etc. Costa Rica is a Catholic country. Nice people to your face but will judge you after you walk away. Back then they definitely didn't like to see 'gay' behavior as it was deemed you were throwing gay in their faces. It was not appreciated. No thoughts of gay marriage as a matter of fact, the Catholic church pushed back hard on legalizing gay marriage. But what about now? 2024? Have things turned the corner? Do Costa Ricans still dis...

    Big gay michael's big gay coffee party. 😀I had an interesting experience in San Jose that is somewhat related to the topic. A long time ago when I first started coming to Costa Rica I was usually by myself, so of course I would get approached by working girls to see if I was out shopping for what they were selling. One night I was approached by an obviously trans person who called herself Xinia. I told her politely that wasn't my thing and we parted amicably. A day or two later I was sitting in the plaza at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica people watching when guess who came and sat by me. While I'm not gay I'm also not offended by gayness and enjoy talking to all kinds of people. We started conversing "I'm from Venezuela. Everything beautiful in Venezuela." when all of a sudden Xinia looked up, grabbed her bags and took off. I looked over to see a small crowd of working girls trotting in my direction. As they passed one called out to me that that was a man. "I know" I responded, but they were off in pursuit. Seems like the working girls took offense if they thought a trans person was working their area.

    I live as gay expat. I am always curious what the gay experience is like for expats in other locations. I have lived in several states back in America and several countries. Gay culture and how the straight community treats you is extremely different from metro to metro and more so country to country. I move from The Netherlands next week after a couple of years. It has a reputation for being progressive and forwarded thinking but that was in the past. They have not progressed since. As a gay man here and I have heard from other gay expats the same that the attitude towards the lgbtq community is fairly poor here. Its more for show for pc purposes when they boast on being open here in The Netherlands. A large city like The Hague has three gay bars. They are filled with straight elderly people and college age girls in the name of inclusiveness. They took the gay out of gay. If I could make a living in Costa Rica and and find a hot dom, I would never keave lol, y puedo español.🎉

    It's my belief, as a straight, that the Transgender +++ community is hurting the gay/lesbian communities because of their 'in your face' approach. Also, the transgender community interferes with parental rights, as they prey on the vulnerable. If people think mental health is an issue now, just wait for the years to come. To each their own, but preying on children is a crime. .... just my opinion. People have to realize that gays and transgender +++ are two different communities. 🙏

    Straight complaining is one thing. But i hear people asking why isnt something done differently for better results and people just say "well...this is a third world country" that is not the reason. Nor is the population. Locals and expats suffer from lack of action and forsight. Ex: toxic pectides and fertilizers or high import taxes. This effects the quality of goods and prices for everyone. "Nice" things dont need to be expensive if people are open to learning new ways to create. Future generations are not being helped as much if everyone is just about relaxing today. People should be able to travel anywhere if they arent hard criminals. the land is not yours bc you were born there. No one knows the true history of conquer, migration, etc to say "this is my land, you need my permission to visit". I heard some people from the states are jaded when it comes to language since more and more jobs ask for bilingual, businesses and government cater to it & many never bother to learn english, but when you go abroad they are expected to know their language with little help. Fair prices are difficult when you dont know a local. If we cant trust each other to be fair on prices anywhere then what are humans doing? Look at the state of us, sad.

    The notion of building to "North American standards" in CR is silly! This is NOT North America. The climate is completely different. The materials are different. The builders are much more familiar with local materials. Also, the "North American standards" are pretty bad - house built to that standard wouldn't even pass the inspection in Germany. 🤔.. not sure why would anybody even try to "inspire" to that.. 🤷‍♂️... Guanacaste coast is littered with 100's of those "built to North American standard" houses for sale right now. What makes you think you will do better? You won't.

    • @christopherdrown3817
      @christopherdrown3817 4 дня назад

      North America is vast and diverse, with many climates similar to Costa Rica, including tropical/coastal areas, mountainous regions, hot and humid zones, and dry forests. Most modern building science, materials, and techniques used worldwide, including in Germany and Costa Rica, have either been developed in North America or evolved from those in North America. However, I'm not saying that Europe and Central America don't have distinct building practices and standards that are highly regarded. The fact is that building science has the same fundamentals everywhere you go in the world. The key difference in construction between the U.S. and Costa Rica lies in how these same materials are implemented and the installation processes. The longevity and safety of any material and devices ultimately depend on proper application and installation, this is where North American standards and manufacturer specifications become crucial. When I refer to 'North American standards,' I'm talking about fundamental building science principles that ensure safety, quality, and functionality-important factors no matter where you are. It's not about imposing a foreign style but ensuring that the chosen materials, techniques, and safety features are correctly implemented to withstand the local environment. The goal isn't to replicate North American homes but to enhance the longevity and safety of structures using proven methods. Many homes in Guanacaste and throughout Costa Rica are built to varying standards. Unfortunately, many were not executed correctly, which is part of the reason many are struggling in the market. My approach is about transparency and ensuring that homeowners get the quality, durability, and safety they expect, tailored to the unique and diverse conditions of Costa Rica. I appreciate your perspective, and it's a good reminder of the importance of adapting building practices to the local context.

    Building a house in CR seems like a full time job. I would not even think about it unless I lived there for a number of years.

    • @christopherdrown3817
      @christopherdrown3817 4 дня назад

      Building a house in Costa Rica is indeed a full-time job, especially if you're unfamiliar with the local business culture, processes, and regulations. It can be even more challenging if you’re not well-versed in construction materials and techniques or don’t have the time to learn about them before starting the project. I agree that it's wise to live in the area and understand the culture before undertaking such a project, as this experience can provide valuable insights into the local environment and building practices. For those who prefer a hands-off approach or want comprehensive guidance through the entire design and build process, that's where I assist through owner’s representation service.

    Chris offers important information in good home building. I hate to use north American standards even though they can be valuable to the home buyer, too me it is just a matter of right and wrong and that will relieve many headaches. I would be very disappointed to build a new home and have major problems in ten years anywhere in the world. Good interview Michael, you ask good questions ones that pop in my head, and Chris offers valuable answers. I don't care if he is a nerd he knows his stuff and can save people big money. As always, knowledge is power.

    • @christopherdrown3817

      I completely agree-building a home is about getting things right from the start, no matter where you are in the world. Most building materials and techniques used in Costa Rica have either been developed in North America or evolved from those in North America. The key difference in construction lies in where these materials are implemented and the installation processes. The longevity of any material ultimately depends on proper application and installation, which is where North American standards and manufacturer specifications become crucial.

      I agree that Costa Rica has a wonderful culture; I'm not trying to change that at all. The fundamentals of building science are the same no matter where you are in the world, and many of these standards were developed in the United States. My services aren’t about altering Costa Rican architecture but about ensuring that proper building science is applied to the existing construction materials and techniques used in the country. Whether it's new construction (where we implement proper techniques) or for home buyers (provide them with transparency of the property conditions), ensuring folks receive the safety, functionality, and quality they are paying for and expecting, regardless of the project's size.

Definitely a money grab from the politicians, a freaking $15 shirt costs $40 in Costa Rica and it’s all the extortion you got to pay to get your stuff there. I’m gonna have to run for president there and make some drastic changes, seems like me fellow Ticos love getting ripped off, I tell my cousins, the car you drive I can get for a fraction of what you paid and they get mad at me, specially If criticize their handlers.
